Earth Day, April 22nd is the perfect afternoon to dedicate to your professional and personal development, and learn about sustainability policy and renewable resources all in one place. Plan to attend America’s Finest Green City Leadership Forum at the eco-friendly Hotel Solamar in Downtown San Diego.

This is an extremely unique event, giving attendees a panoramic perspective from city, state, regional and national vantage points.  Come hear and interact with political leaders at this public policy forum on the subjects of climate change, sustainability, renewable energy, public plans, job creation and resources available from the stimulus, and the regular fiscal year appropriations and budget cycles.  We will also have best practice models from corporate and community organizations.

Mayor Jerry Sanders, Among America’s Mayors, San Diego’s Mayor Jerry Sanders is a leader in creating economic prosperity & environmental sustainability. In April of 2007, Mayor Jerry Sanders announced the formation of a new Cleantech (Clean Technology) Initiative in an effort to promote the expansion, attraction and retention of businesses that develop products and technologies that provide environmentally sustainable solutions. Clean technologies enable a more valuable use of natural resources and reduce ecological impacts to the region. Mayor Sanders also launched an innovative solar program, dubbed San Diego CleanGeneration, which is designed to  make the conversion to solar energy affordable to homeowners by financing the cost of installation and spreading it out over 20 years of property tax bills. Come hear Mayor Sanders discuss these and other green initiatives, and his perspective of what is next for a sustainable San Diego.

Donna Frye, District 6 City Council, and Chair of the Council’s Natural Resources and Culture Committee as well as the San Diego River Conservancy, the councilmember exerts considerable local influence on the issue she once rode to prominence as a community activist: protecting the environment. She remains passionate and vigilant about clean water and air, and is dedicated to preserving our parks, canyons and open space. Her fight to restore and protect the San Diego River earned Frye the Legislator of the Year Award for 2005 from the San Diego River Park Foundation. She also received the 2005 San Diego Environmental Champion Award from the San Diego League of Conservation Voters. Frye’s work has also been recognized in Sacramento, where Senator Christine Kehoe honored her in 2005 as the California legislature’s “Woman of the Year.”

Dr. Emily Young, San Diego Foundation, is responsible for working with donors to provide them with knowledge and information concerning the region’s environmental needs and opportunities, managing The Foundation’s environmental grants, and working with volunteers in the Environment Working Group to design and implement the Environment Program. Before she joined The Foundation, Emily was an Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona’s Department of Geography and Regional Development for five years, where she taught courses on environment and society as well as Latin America. She has also conducted extensive research on marine fisheries and wildlife protection, community-based conservation, and sustainable development in coastal marine areas of Baja California.

Lisa Bicker, president and CEO of CleanTECH San Diego, wants the region to be a hub for climate science. Lisa is president and CEO of Clean Tech San Diego, a new, private nonprofit corporation working to establish San Diego’s position as a leader in the clean technology industry.  Prior to joining Clean Tech San Diego, Ms. Bicker was president of the California Clean Energy Fund (CalCEF), a private nonprofit corporation formed to accelerate investment in California’s clean energy economy.   Before joining CalCEF, Ms. Bicker was a co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of TruePricing, Inc. an energy technology company.  Prior to that, Ms Bicker served as Chief Operating Officer of NewEnergy, Inc., a high-growth, retail electricity provider that grew to over $800 million in revenues prior to its acquisition by AES.   Constellation NewEnergy is now the largest retail electricity provider in the United States.  Ms. Bicker has also served as General Counsel to California Council for Environmental and Economic Balance (CCEEB), a non-profit advocacy group founded by Edmund G. “Pat” Brown.  Prior to that, she served as senior writer for Governor George Deukmejian.   Ms. Bicker has a B.A. from the University of California at Davis and a J.D. from the University of San Francisco. In 2007, she was appointed to and currently serves on the Economic and Technology Advancement Advisory Committee (ETAAC), a statewide committee that is tasked with reporting to the Governor, the state Legislature and the Air Resources Board on recommendations as to how to effectively implement AB 32, the state’s landmark global warming law.   She is a member of the California State Bar and several industry associations.

Elaine Rosenberger is the Chairman of the Board for the San Diego Regional Sustainability Partnership. Elaine has been in the financial industry for twenty-four years as the Vice President of Construction and Real Estate working with developers and contractors all over the country. She also served as the Senior Vice President of Private Banking for five years becoming the top revenue producing division of the bank. Ms. Rosenberger has worked closely with the Federal Reserve regarding low income housing in the community. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Finance and Business Administration, from the University of Texas at Austin. Ms. Rosenberger also owns a financial consulting company in San Diego, has served as a member of the San Diego President’s Round Table, and was chairperson of the Women’s Resource Network.  Ms. Rosenberger has been a featured speaker at various forums to include SBA, “Empowerment for Women”, and “The Seven Steps in Getting Your Business Started”. Elaine Rosenberger is the President of Seeds Global Alliance which is a consulting firm providing financing alternatives for energy, provides consultation and financing on building green and sustainability best practices, feasibility reports, environmental engineering and architectural engineering.

From Senator Barbara Boxer’s Ofice-Caridad Sanchez, District Director for San Diego and Imperial Counties,  Senator Boxer is a national leader on environmental protection, she is the first woman to Chair the U.S. Senate’s Committee on Environment and Public Works (EPW). On the Committee, she advocates forcefully for clean air and water, with a particular focus on the fight against global warming. She also Chairs EPW’s Subcommittee on Public Sector Solutions to Global Warming, Oversight, and Children’s Health Protection. In addition to her work on the EPW Committee, Senator Boxer has won numerous awards for her efforts to create a cleaner, healthier environment. She authored the amendment to the Safe Drinking Water Act ensuring that drinking water standards are set to protect children and other vulnerable populations. She has been a leader in the fight to remove arsenic from drinking water, block oil drilling in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge and along California’s coast, stop the use of human subjects in pesticide testing, and revitalize the Superfund by making polluters – not taxpayers – pay to clean up the toxic waste they leave behind.

From State Senator Christine Kehoe’s Office- Deanna Spehn, Policy Director,  Senator Christine Kehoe has been leading the path for a new generation of effective California legislators, by setting a high standard for integrity and accomplishment. During her time in the Senate, Kehoe has focused on the environment and good government measures.  She chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee, and is a member of the Banking, Finance & Insurance Committee; Energy, Utilities and Communications Committee; Local Government Committee; Natural Resources & Water Committee; Transportation & Housing Committee; and the Joint Legislative Committee on Emergency Services and Homeland Security.

From Congresswoman Susan Davis’s Office- Ricardo Flores, Community Representative, in Congress, Susan Davis has earned a reputation as a bipartisan consensus builder. She is proud to serve on the House Armed Services Committee where she serves as Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Military Personnel. Susan also sits on the House Education and Labor Committee and the House Administration Committee. She is focusing on the issues of defense, education, election reform, the environment, health care, and veterans affairs, especially significant due to of the large veterans population in San Diego.  With respect to the environment Susan has opposed oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge,  supported increasing fuel economy standards for trucks and SUVs, and secured critical funding to protect San Diego’s wildlife and open spaces.

Jason Rose, is the General Manager for Waste Management of San Diego and Orange County.  He has been with the company for 15 years and is passionate about environmental stewardship and assisting companies in attaining their sustainability goals. In San Diego County, Waste Management recently achieved Cal/OSHA’s prestigious VPP Star status and the company operates one of the largest natural gas fleets in the United States.  Waste Management is also applying for LEED EB certification through the USGBC and has applied for the California WRAP award for its recycling diversion results.  Waste Management is now expanding into offering comprehensive healthcare solutions and green consultation. Jason is an active participant in the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce CEO Forum, Junior Seau Foundation, Charley Hoffman Foundation, Habitat for Humanity and MADD.  He graduated from San Diego State University and later went on to earn his MBA.  Jason lives in Carlsbad with his wife of 12 years, Clare, and their two children, Aimee, 9, and Andrew, 6.
